To enjoy the countryside surrounding Frederick, a short drive west will take you to Gambrill State Park and The Overlook.  Follow Route 40 west to see lots of antique shops, country-style restaurants and beautiful old farms.  Frederick County’s role in history includes the monument at Francis Scott Key’s grave in Frederick.  Also interred in Mount Olivet Cemetery is Barbara Fritchie, whose flag-waving defiance of Stone Wall Jackson’s presence in Frederick was immortalized in John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem “Barbara Fritchie”.  Her reconstructed home is in Frederick’s historic district. Fort Detrick is just minutes from our location, home of the National Cancer Institute and the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, which is the leading medical research laboratory for the nation’s biological defense program.  Mount Saint Mary’s is located 30 minutes north of Frederick and is one of the leading schools in our area, it is also the location of the National Shrine Grotto of the Lourdes, nearby on the grounds of the National Fire Academy is the monument to the firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty.
